In 2025, I began a partnership with the Japan chapter of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and reflected deeply on how I could contribute. Through ongoing discussions, I arrived at a specific mission: to visit the field as a "reporting director," document the situation, and share those stories with the world.
We are not seeking external funding to cover the costs of travel, filming, or editing. Instead, we simply aim to convey the realities on the ground and the lives of the people there. We intend to carry out this project over the next three years, hoping to engage as many people as possible.
The team at UNHCR taught me a great deal about topics I was previously unfamiliar with regarding refugees, who are forced to flee their familiar homelands and cross international borders due to war, conflict, or persecution. Currently, Syrian refugees living in Jordan are technically speaking able to return to Syria, and the number of returnees is increasing. However, there are those who cannot return because they lack homes or jobs. Some have put down roots and built lives during their more than ten years of displacement in Jordan, and children born there have never even set foot in Syria.
"What is a homeland?"
I will turn my gaze toward global events while drawing parallels with the domestic stories I have covered in the past.
We have named this project "Ray of Hope."
I am embarking on this journey with two staff members I have worked with previously: one whom I met when I was in my third year of junior high school, and another whom I met in 2023.
A crew of few for the many.
There are things that remain unseen when we are apart. There are things we cannot imagine when we do not know to think. I hope to serve as a "magnifying glass" that brings that distance a little closer, and as a "megaphone" that amplifies the message to the world.
We look forward to the day when the word "refugee" no longer has meaning.
To that end, we will devote our full efforts, however modest they may be.
